{"id":936,"date":"2019-07-02T03:53:59","date_gmt":"2019-07-02T03:53:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thetembo.com\/clip\/?p=936"},"modified":"2020-10-27T03:34:24","modified_gmt":"2020-10-27T03:34:24","slug":"solastalgia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thetembo.com\/clip\/2019\/07\/02\/solastalgia\/","title":{"rendered":"Solastalgia"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading Time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> &lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute<\/span><\/span>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like the aftermath of a beautiful sunset of deep oranges wrinkled in \nthe sky, cyans and cerulean blues coloring the opens spaces between \ncrimson stretches that reach into the darkness of blue-grey clouds to \ntint the bottoms of the opposing sky, pink, my little patch of nature is\n gone like the day leaving nothing but grey, indifferent clouds of the \nlong night. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trash litters the trail, shredded plastic bags torn by exposure \nto the sun and the wind rustle in the stench. The ersatz leaves of bags \nand wrappers catch in the branches of the bushes. A feral pig roots \nthrough the trash and mud at the water&#8217;s edge, eying me warily. A ripple\n in the surface might be a fish, I can&#8217;t imagine what could survive in \nthis cesspool. Shorebirds wade in the cesspool, out of desperation for \nclean water? Yellow flowers of weeds heroically push their way through \nthe trash and broken concrete. Power lines hum overhead.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In my mind, I see the fast-flowing stream of my youth. On a lucky \nday, I might spot the fin of a steelhead making its way upstream to its \nspawning grounds or an otter darting in and out of the reeds and \ncattails, or an osprey patrolling the waters for a meal. I might skip \nstones over the surface, paddle a kayak, take a few pictures of a \nfragile flower, have lunch on the banks, or throw a stick in the water \nfor my dog to give chase.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What happened to my small patch of nature? Did it surrender to my \nabsence? Why did nobody speak for it?
